Sycamore

Sycamore

Family: Sapindaceae

Genus: Acer

Species: Acer pseudoplatanus

Native to: Central, eastern, and southern Europe

Grows up to: 35 m

Lives up to: 400 years

Description: The leaves are between 7-16cm long and have 5 lobes. In younger tree, the leaves have easily recognisable red leaf stalks. They can also be spotted by their bunches of winged fruits that hang from the tree once the female flowers have been pollinated. These fruits are called samaras, but are often referred to as helicopters due to the way they spin as they fall.

Fact: Sycamore wood contains antibacterial properties that make it the perfect choice for chopping boards and other culinary equipment.
